Welcoming the spotted eagle ray pups
Just recently, Discover Cove announced the birth of four spotted eagle rays which is currently closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic. The birth of these eagle rays is a momentous event not only for Discovery Cove but also for the entire zoological community since it is a near-threatened marine species and part of the Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
A close look at the spotted eagle ray
The spotted eagle rays are part of the fish family, defined by their flat, wide bodies, spotted coloration, and the peculiar shape of their snouts – rounded and pointed at the tip which strikingly resembles the beak of a bird. Every spotted eagle ray has a unique pattern.
The ray is often seem swimming either close to the surface or along the bottom and will leap out of the water when pursued. It is known to feed on a variety of bottom-dwelling marine animals such as mollusks, worms, cephalopods, fish, and crustaceans by using its hard, plate-like teeth to crush the shells of its prey.
Visit the eagle rays pups soon
All the spotted eagle ray pups are doing great and eagerly exploring the depths of the Grand Reef at Discovery Cove. A team of experts continues to monitor the pups. Overall, the pups are eating well and quickly growing in size.
